Patio Door Glass Repair
New glass in the panel you already own
A cracked or fogged patio door panel does not mean a new patio door. In almost every case the glass comes out of the existing frame and new glass goes in, at a fraction of the cost and with none of the disruption.

The largest and most regulated pane in the house
Door glass is not the same as window glass, and it fails in a way that surprises people.
All glass in and beside a door has to be safety glazing, which in practice means tempered glass. Tempering is a heat treatment that puts the surface of the pane under compression, so that when it does fail it breaks into thousands of small blunt fragments rather than long shards. That is why a shattered patio door looks like a pile of gravel and why the entire panel goes at once rather than simply cracking.
It also means tempered glass cannot be cut or drilled after manufacture. A replacement panel has to be made to size, which is why patio door glass is always a measure-first, fit-later job rather than something carried on a van.
Most modern patio panels are insulated units: two tempered panes bonded around a spacer with a sealed cavity between them. When people say a patio door has fogged, that perimeter seal has failed and moisture has entered the cavity. The glass cannot be cleaned and it will not clear, but the frame, the rollers and the hardware are all untouched by it.
If the panel is already coming out for glass, it is the cheapest moment you will ever get to replace worn rollers and renew the weatherseals. We will always tell you if that is worth doing while we are there.
The most expensive pane in the house, and the most replaceable
Patio door glass is large, heavy and always safety-rated, which makes it the pane people assume cannot be dealt with on its own. It can. The panel comes out, the old glass is removed, and a new unit goes into the same frame.
There are two distinct problems people call about. One is breakage — an impact, a storm, a falling limb, or the sudden complete shatter that tempered glass does. The other is fogging, where a sealed unit has lost its perimeter seal.
Both are glass problems rather than door problems, and both leave the frame, the track and the hardware entirely serviceable.
The panel comes out, new glass goes in, and the door you already own carries on.

Patio door glass work
Sliding, stacking and fixed panels, in the correct glass for the opening.
Cracked and shattered panels
Cleared safely and reglazed. Tempered glass fails all at once into small pieces, so this is a clearing job as much as a glazing one.
Fogged sealed units
Failed dual-pane units replaced inside the existing panel frame, restoring the view and the insulation.
Tempered safety glass
Glass in and beside doors is a required safety glazing location, and tempered is what we fit.
Low-E upgrades
If the glass is coming out anyway, the moment to cut the solar heat coming through a west-facing wall of glass.
Fixed and stacking panels
Not just the moving panel — fixed lites and stacking panels reglazed the same way.
Rollers done at the same time
The panel is already out, which makes it the cheapest possible moment to replace worn rollers.
The problems Georgia patio door glass has
Storms, trees and a great deal of afternoon sun.
Severe storms and hail
Georgia sits in an active severe weather corridor, with a spring storm season that brings hail and straight-line winds and a second round in the fall. Patio doors present the largest glass target on most houses.
A state under tree canopy
Georgia is one of the most heavily forested states in the country, and metro Atlanta is famously a city in a forest. Falling limbs during storms and ice events account for a large share of the broken patio glass we attend.
Sustained solar load
A wall of glass facing west absorbs an enormous amount of heat through a Georgia afternoon. That load works constantly on the perimeter seal of an insulated unit, which is why fogging usually appears on one elevation of a house first.
Why reglaze rather than replace
Same outcome, a fraction of the cost and no disruption.
A fraction of the price
Reglazing a panel against replacing a patio door is not a close comparison.
No building work
No frame removal, no siding or brick disturbance, no repainting.
Correct safety glazing
Tempered glass, properly specified for a door opening, rather than whatever is quickest to source.
One trip to measure, one to fit
Tempered glass has to be made to size, so we measure first and install once it is ready.
Three steps, no runaround

Patio door glass questions
Can you replace just the glass in my patio door?
Yes, and it is almost always the right approach. The frame, rollers and hardware stay; only the glass unit is renewed.
My patio door shattered into thousands of tiny pieces.
That is tempered glass behaving exactly as designed. It fails all at once into blunt fragments rather than shards, which is why it is required in doors. We clear it safely and reglaze the panel.
Why can you not cut the glass on site?
Tempered glass cannot be cut or drilled after it is made — it would shatter. Every replacement panel is manufactured to your measurements, which is why it is a two-visit job.
The glass is fogged but not broken. Worth fixing?
Usually yes. A fogged unit has lost its insulating value as well as its clarity, and on a large patio door that is a meaningful amount of conditioned air going out of the room.
Should I do the rollers at the same time?
If they are worn, yes. The panel has to come out for glass work anyway, so doing both together saves the labour of a second visit.
Other repairs we handle
Doors and windows are all we do, so whatever has failed, it is probably on this list.
